Senior "Senior" Prom article from Thursday March 27 Charlotte Observer

I wanted to share the story that was printed in today’s Charlotte Observer. We are really excited about the possibility of how great this event can be. Please pass the word onto anyone who may want to come. $10 at the door per person. There will be appetizers, photos and we will elect a Prom King and Queen. The link to the story is below as well. Should be a lot of fun. – Mike D’Avria

These could be some fun senior moments

CELESTE SMITH

The king and queen at this Saturday's "Senior Senior Prom" at the Morrison YMCA will have lots of fans well out of high school.

That's because their votes will come from fellow 50-and-uppers from the Morrison, Siskey and Harris YMCAs' active older adult groups.

The event name is a play on the teen leader clubs at those Ys -- which includes high school seniors -- throwing the party for the adults.

"We share a lot of the same space," said Mike D'Avria, teen director at Morrison YMCA, noting how adult groups use Y meeting rooms in the morning, and teens use it in the afternoon.

"Teens and seniors are kind of similar in their social lives... They just want to hang out with friends. They don't have children; they don't want someone telling them what to do."

The cost is $10 per person. Proceeds benefit the Y's community outreach program, which provides scholarships for families who can't afford memberships.

The teens are organizing the party, but they'll be out on the dance floor, too. Their older friends want to teach them some moves, D'Avria said.

Morrison's decorated gymnasiums will be done up in stars and lights. There will be a photo area where take-home pictures will be printed out.

And there will be a prom queen and king vote among the adult attendees from the three Ys.

Who will win?

"Whichever YMCA brings the most people will probably win," D'Avria said. "Just like high school. It's a popularity contest."

Want to go?

Saturday's "Senior Senior Prom," inspired by the 50-and-over members of the Y adult groups, is open to non-Y members, too, said Mike D'Avria, teen director at the Morrison YMCA in Ballantyne. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the Morrison, Siskey and Harris Ys, or at the door. The party runs from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at the Morrison Y, 9405 Bryant Farms Road.

Volunteerapalooza Saturday April 18th 7:30 am - Sunday April 19th 6 pm

We are excited to announce that the dates of our 2nd Annual Leaders’ Club Volunteerapalooza have been changed so it no longer coincides with the Ardrey Kell Prom. We will still volunteer at the 5K race, but this year’s Volunteerapalooza will be focused on our new YMCA Event: Inspire! Ballantyne Arts and Culinary Festival. We will volunteer all day on Saturday, and then spend the night at the YMCA, wake up and volunteer on Sunday as well. The tentative schedule is:

Saturday April 18th

7:30 am – 6 pm: Assist in all areas of the art festival as well as set-up. (We will work in shifts so there will be breaks involved, as well as lunch/dinner)

6:30 pm – 10:45 pm: Middle School Madness volunteering

11:30 pm – 2 am: Leaders’ Club trainings and team building

Sunday April 19th:

9 am: Light of Christ Church service at the YMCA

10:30 am – 6 pm: Back to the Arts Festival for Family Day

So, all in all, we will be together for about 36 hours, with 25 hours devoted to volunteering. This will put almost all of you going to BRLS over the 100 hours mark. The deadline to sign up to volunteer will be our April 1st Leaders’ meeting. Call or e-mail if you have any questions.
